"Young-Soon Park is back… 'I will pave the way for health functional foods in pharmacies.'"

“The Icon of Passion” is back.

Dr. Young-Soon Park (Busan College of Pharmacy), founder of Onnuri Pharmacy Chain—the largest pharmacy franchise in Korea—and Rexgen Biotech, often compared to the Samsung of the health functional food industry, was known for her charisma and advocacy for revitalizing pharmacy management.

After achieving remarkable success in the pharmaceutical industry, Dr. Park, who had left suddenly, has returned to stand before pharmacists with Rexpharm, a company specializing in immune-boosting products.

She comes back with the ambition to revitalize the health functional food sector in pharmacies, which has lost its competitive edge against other distribution channels, under the overarching premise of promoting public health.

“COVID-19 has changed many things. However, the problem is that such pandemics could recur. Many scholars have stated that as long as global warming continues, the era of rampant viruses will not end. So, what should we do? It’s essential to enhance the immune function of the public. That is the best form of prevention. And this is why I have returned.”

She believes that only immunity can protect public health and improve the lives of the elderly in this aging society.

Thus, Rexpharm will develop products utilizing Phellinus mycelium (beta-glucan) and collagen from Jeju sea cucumber, both of which enhance immune function.

To enable more people to strengthen their immunity, prices will be set reasonably.

Moreover, she emphasizes that pharmacies must communicate with patients based on low-cost, high-quality products.

“Currently, health-related foods are dominated by online sales. Especially young people don’t visit pharmacies. We need to let go of the desire for higher prices. We should offer competitive prices like online but present a differentiated image of pharmacists. First, we need patients to come in. We need to communicate. Only then can we break free from the current reality where we are dependent on prescriptions.”

Thus, her current concern is how to establish the “connection between patients and pharmacists.”

“Smart patients tend to disregard pharmacists’ advice, while pharmacists are increasingly reluctant to engage with patients. How can we break this vicious cycle? We need to provide affordable yet excellent products and have pharmacists who are smarter than the patients. Rexpharm is not just a company selling products; we will provide various academic information and communication tools for pharmacists.”

She reiterates her commitment to firmly establishing pharmacies.

“I must revitalize pharmacies. I will achieve this through health functional foods, which is my area of expertise. Please watch over us.”

Her infinite love for pharmacists and pharmacies can be traced back through three generations in her family, as both her daughter and granddaughter are pharmacists.

Her entire life has been dedicated to supporting pharmacists and pharmacies.

After running a pharmacy for 33 years, she introduced the concept of pharmacy chains, which was unfamiliar in 1991, helping to establish a progressive pharmacy environment. In 1996, she founded a proper health functional food company to aid pharmacies. She was also vocal about the need for legislation to ensure health functional food products were exclusively handled in pharmacies during the early days of the separation of prescriptions and over-the-counter sales.

At that time, she was affectionately nicknamed “The Passionate Young-Soon Park.” Even the motto of the Onnuri Pharmacy Chain during her tenure was “Burning Passion.”

Her final plea, fueled by her last passion, is for pharmacists.

“Pharmacists can do a lot for the public and society. I love the profession of pharmacy more than anyone else. My entire life seems to have been a journey to enhance the professional value of pharmacists. The same will continue in the future. I aim to create a happy environment for pharmacists, including my daughter and granddaughter.”
